2010 goes out with...

A warm up and possibly heavy rain.

First things first I am getting concerned with a possible Freezing Rain event Wednesday night into Thursday AM. There could be a possibly a 4-6 hour window of Freezing Rain before the warm front lifts into Northern Ontario. That will then push temperatures above freezing starting around lunch time and it will stay above freezing until New Years Day. Highs Wed will be around 30. Upper 20s for lows on Wednesday Night. Then Thursday once the warm front lifts through will easily get into the 40s.

Thick fog with the rapid snow melt will be an issue come Thursday night. I think our lows by early Friday AM our no colder than 40. Friday (New Years Eve) afternoon highs believe it or not will get into the lower 50s. During New Years eve a strong cold front will approach from the west. Heavy rain is possible with maybe even a chance of some thunder. Right now though I'm betting on the rain/thunder holds off til after midnight. New Years day I think we hit the high in the AM (Upper 40s) then temps will be falling during the afternoon Saturday back into the 20s. Rain will be changing to snow and any water on the roads will turn to ice.

TK.

P.S... Maps of this system is on my previous blog.

North Dakota Snow...

Winter storm and possible blizzard conditions will move into North Dakota starting very late Wednesday and continuing into New Years Day. This is going to be a 3 round punch. Round 1 Snow for Northern North Dakota (Devils Lake-Williston Points North) Wednesday Night into Thursday with up to 6-12" of snow . Round 2 Snow for areas east of Bot/Devils Lake/Bismarck starting very early Friday into New Years Eve with up to a foot of snow possible towards Fargo. Round 3 for all North Dakota. Strong winds and dangerous cold wind chills starting late Thursday into New Years Weekend.

Above is Thursday AM's weather map. You can see the heaviest amount of pre-cip/snow will be across Northern ND.

First system is moving out into northern MN. Second wave is moving into KS. There will be a lull in the snow late Thursday night. Before the second system starts to move northeast. Winds will start to Increase late Thursday.

This is Friday Morning Above... Nebraska/South Dakota will more than likely be getting pounded with heavy snow. Winds will be an issue for all of ND by this time creating below zero wind chills and possibly blizzard conditions.

Second storm system moves into MN Friday Night (above) as you can see with this one... Eastern ND/Fargo really taking it on the chin with this one. Dangerous wind chills possibly up to 40 below are possible with strong winds creating blizzard conditions by Friday Night across the entire state. Air temps Friday across most of the state will struggle to get to zero.

Winter Coat, No Coat, Heavy Winter Coat

Friday looking like not to bad of a day. We will be out ahead of a cold front that will have Southwest flow on Friday pushing temperatures near 50 degrees. Cold Front slides through overnight Friday and opening the door for chilly weather on Saturday. It will be dry on Saturday but it will be cold. Michigan State football Saturday looks cold. With tailgate temps in the mid 30s and kick temp at noon around 38.
As quickly as we cool down Saturday, we will rebound nicely on Sunday with highs in the 50s. It will be wet though with a chance of showers. Chance of showers will continue on Monday and Tuesday highs very mild for thanksgiving week. Temps in the 60s.
Looking ahead to Wednesday and Thanksgiving , another storm system will effect the Great Lakes. First look at this system and first thoughts is that will start out with rain with this system. Then models quickly change us over to snow on Wednesday night and Thanksgiving. Bitter cold air looks to be behind this system. Highs possibly may struggle to get out of the 20s starting on Thanksgiving and next Friday.

Monday Night Forecast

High pressure is building in from the North and East. This will keep the weather quiet for sure. But with NE winds around the High Pressure right over the warmer waters of Lake Huron. This will create some lake clouds. This will cause some differences in temperatures. With the cloud cover along M-25 up the Lake Huron shore line, this should hold low temperatures in the low 30s in these locations and around the city of Detroit. Get closer to US-23 and towards Lansing. Another night in the 20s is expected.

Quiet weather and November like temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday. Election Day forecast other than a few passing clouds looks good. Highs will be around 50 Tuesday and Wednesday.

Next Front comes in late Wednesday. This will open the door for some of the coldest air we have seen this fall.
.

Cold air spills in hardcore Thursday Night. Friday temperatures struggle to hit 40, infact I think most of us stay in the 30s. Also Thursday night and Friday. Some of us could see our first snowflakes of the year. Lake effect snowshowers will get going Thursday Night and Friday. As of right now, I am not expecting snow accumulation around Metro Detroit, but Northern MI and the thumb might see some.

Good News as of now in the extended forecast is that the big storm expected in the eastern part of the United States Friday and Early Saturday should stay far enough east that it really won't impact MI and the central Great Lakes Much.

New Tornado Watch!!!

New Tornado Watch is ineffect for all of Southern Michigan. Storms will be capable of producing Damaging Winds in excess of 80-90mph. Along with Tornadoes. Some Tornadoes maybe large and long track. If a Tornado Warning is issued for you're area. Do not grab the video camera! You more than likely will not see the tornado because it will be rained wraped. Go to you're basement, or interior room with out windows!

Treat Severe T-Storms as tornado warnings as well! Winds in storms may produce up to 80-90mph winds

One for the History Books?

I can't stress enough how much people need to be alert to the weather on Tuesday. One of the most powerful storm systems that could beat out the Nov 1998 storm and the Edmund Fitzgerald storm will move through upper great lakes. A squall line of storms will be along the cold front. This may cause Hurricane Force winds and possibly and isolated tornado. Storm motion will be fast to the NE.

Powerful Fall Storm

A very powerful fall storm system that will rival the intensity of the Nov 1998 Storm and the storm that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior will take aim on the Great Lakes Region on Tuesday.

Out ahead of this storm system. A strong warm southerly flow will warm temperatures into the mid to upper 70s on Monday and Tuesday. On Tuesday, a strong cold front will push through the state. Severe weather is possible Tuesday afternoon.

Behind this storm system, winds will change from the south/southwest to the west or southwest. Sustained winds of around 50mph with wind gusts up to 70mph are possible on land areas. Near the open waters along the west shoreline and US-2 shoreline of Lake Michigan along with Lake Superior shore line could experience sustained winds of 60mph with gust up to 70-75mph Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday Night.

Please take Monday afternoon to lockdown and secure loose items such as patio furniture, trash cans and Halloween items. Failure to do so may result in objects becoming air-born, possibly resulting in car damage or human injury. Power outages are possible as well, along with tree damage in some areas. Don't approach down powerlines.

Updated blog on Monday Afternoon.

Severe Wx Update.

New Severe T-Storm watch is in effect for Lower MI not including the OH/IN broader Counties until 1am.

Line of storms crossing over the lake Michigan Shore line will be moving through the state through 1am. Main severe weather threat tonight will be damaging winds in excess of 60mph. Especially along and west of 127 (Lansing/Jackson to Lake MI) I'm still questioning if its still going to hold its own (the line of storms) by the time it reaches the Detroit Metro. Up til about 10:30/11pm the severe weather threat will be highest along and west of 127. If the Detroit Metro/Flint is going to get in on the act, it will be after 11pm.

Beyond this system. Ill hit on this in the next blog. Flood Watches have been posted for parts of the U.P. Up to 3" of rain is possible with the next system that will move through the lakes. This may also bring a severe weather outbreak to lower MI on Thursday Night or Friday.

Severe T-Storm watch is in effect for the counties shaded in the blue until 9pm. Main threat tonight with any storms that pop will be damaging wind gusts over 60mph. An isolated tornado can't be ruled out as well.

As for the rest of the state. I think Det, EL and GR have a shot of severe weather but it will be after 7pm tonight.

Will have more updates through the day.

Birthday Forecast

Cold Front will be cutting through the lakes Wednesday Morning. It will be coming through pretty dry. But still can't rule out a few showers with the cold front passing. Temperatures have been pretty cool since Sunday. Northeastly wind flow off the warmer lake huron waters have touched off clouds and at times scattered showers, especially for the eastern areas and the thumb the last couple of days. The North/Northeastly flow behind the cold front Wednesday Afternoon will once agian touch off scattered showers down wind from Lake Huron. Else where will see a partly sunny setting. Highs behind the system will be Upper 60s Thumb/Northern MI, Low to Mid 70s elsewhere. Bonus sunshine will equal temps slightly warmer.

Cold Front Early Wed AM

Wednesday through Friday morning temperature wise looks cool. High pressure will bulid in Thursday making way for a great Thursday with less humidity. But Wednesday Night into Thursday AM and Thursday night into Friday AM look a tad on the chilly side. With lows away from Metro Detroit and the water falling into the 40s. Even some low to mid 40s Thursday Night in the Saginaw Valley points north.

Wed Night/Thu AM Lows

Thursday Night/Friday AM Lows

Summer does return by the weekend, highs will infact be apporaching 90 by Sunday. The hot weather will continue into early next week.

Sunday's Highs pushing 90

Tuesday Forecast

Just about a re-pete of Monday. Sun and Cloud mix. Can't rule out an isolated shower. Highs in the upper 70s. Maybe some lower 80s if more sun. But more cooler if the clouds hang tougher.

Sunday Forecast

We will have to get by a few scattered showers and storms Saturday Night. After that, get ready for some awesome end of Aug. weather. Mid-60s Saturday night will turn into temps around the 80 mark with low humidity.

Most if not all of next week like I said looks great. The only slight chance of rain comes Tuesday Night with a weak cold front. Behind that much cooler air moves into the lakes on Wednesday.

By the end of next week, there is the possiblity of a major warm up. But still not really sold on it.

EF-1 Tornado Touches Down in Macomb TWP

And EF-1 Tornado touchdown at 22 mile and Hayes Road and traveled south 2 miles before lifting east of the Hall Road/Hayes Intersection. The path like I said was 2 miles long with with max width 250 yards.

In addition, Widespead tree damage was reported all over from 16 mile northward and east of Hayes.

Below is a picture of the super cell storm I caught from my backyard, this is on the SW corner of the storm when it came through Macomb County around 7:30

Will have a full weather update later in the day. Another round of storms is possible Friday Night and Saturday.

Severe Weather Update...

Severe T-Storm watch is in effect until 8pm. But I think most of the heavy weather should be gone by 5. Main threat from these storms will be damaging winds!

Friday, July 23, 2010

Severe T-Storm watch is in effect for areas south of I69/I96 until 1am. Storms Friday Night are firing along a stationary boundary. They will be capable at times of producing damagings winds and an isolated tornadoes.

Heavy rain is very likely with these storms. This may produce some flash flooding, especially the flood prone freeways.

Friday's Forecast

Thursday was the severe weather, Friday will be the heat and humidity will be the bigger story. The following will be the highs across lower MI im going for...

Detroit-93
Adrian-94
Lansing- 92
Grand Rapids - 91
K-Zoo- 93

Combine that with Dewpoints that will be in the mid to at times upper 70s. This will make for one of the most unconfortible days of the summer as heat indexes will be in 100-105 range. Drink plenty of water, and if you can possibly stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, that would be a plus.

There is a slight chance of Severe weather with any storms that fire Friday

A "New" Tornado Watch

For the 3rd time in 24 hours, a new tornado watch has been issued for lower Michigan (also N. IN and NW OH). This watch runs until 7am.

Storms have continued to hold they're own as they cross into over Lake Michigan, Into the state of Michigan. Combine with very high dewpoints, LLJ and warm front slowly retreating north. Storms will hold they're own overnight.

Flooding Threat

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Lower Michigan south of a Ludington to Higgins Lake to Oscoda Line. Below in the image of the Great Lakes radar view. You can see that the storms are lined up from the Holland Shore to almost back to the Wisconsin Dells. And they're moving over the same area causing hours of heavy rain!

On a side note, flooding is especally dangerous at night due to the unknown water depth! Use extreme caution while traveling through the overnight! If you come up to a flooded out road way try to find another route.

New Tornado watch is in effect for Lower MI until 3am. This replaces the tornado watch that was in effect until 10pm. Line of storms off to the west will move into lower MI over the next couple of hrs. This may produce damaging winds, hail and some tornadoes. Also heavy rain is possible, causing some localized flooding

New Tornado watch is in effect for Lower MI until 3am. This replaces the tornado watch that was in effect until 10pm. Weather Update

Tornado Warnings are in effect for Lenawee and Hillsdale County. Tornado Watch is in effect for Detroit South til 11pm.

Ubran & Small Stream Flood Advisoies are in effect for Jackson, Calhoun and K-Zoo Counties

Flash Flood Watches are in effect for a good chunk of Western and Northern Michigan. Heavy rain is possible with some of the storms.

A secondary complex of storms are currently in Wisconsin with tornado warnings. This may bring severe weather later tonight as well.

Tornado Watch

Tornado Watch is in effect for southern lower Michigan until 10pm, a couple super cells have fired along and south of I94. Some of these storms may produced large hail, damaging winds and possibly some tornadoes.

Also as you can see there is another severe line of storms firing in WI. I'm expecting these to move into lower Michigan through the overnight.

Also, Heavy rain is possible which may cause some localized flooding... Flash Flood Watch is in effect for parts of west Michigan and also parts of Northern Michigan.

Storms and Heat

Its my fav. topic. (bah)

Wednesday Night and Thursday look fine, cutting right to the chase Thursday Night. Going to have a warm front lifting through the state. NAM/UMKET and GEM have the bluk of the precip north of I-69 THursday Night. So 24 hours out, im going to go likely Pops (70% and Higher) for central and northern lower Michgan, with a chance of pre-cip south of Flint. As of now SPC doesn't have MI circled for any severe weather. But I think there is a chance. The bigger story will be the heavy rain north of Flint Thursday night, and the tropical air (70 + Dewpoints) surging into the great lakes

Depending on what happens to the storms overnight Thursday into early Friday AM. Leads into the temperatures for Friday. Right now I have 93 for Detroit on Friday, combine with dewpoints between 70-75 will mean Heat Indexes around 100-105. This may require a heat advisory for Friday. If the clouds hang around Friday, temps may not be as bad but it will be humid none the less.

There will be a cold front slippin into state on Friday afternoon. This cold is going to be a slow mover, and will be moving into a unstable atmosphere. SPC does have us circled for Friday for a slight chance of severe weather. There will be storms once agian Friday afternoon and night. Some of which maybe severe. Needless to say, ill know more Thursday. Just heads up Friday might be ugly (and hot) .

I would love to say that the cold front will be moving into Ohio on Saturday and will have a nice day. But I think the front is going to be hung up around Flint/Saginaw early afternoon Saturday, this opens the door for severe weather once again Saturday, along with hot and humid weather south of this boundary. Another wave of low pressure will ride along this boundary as well. Northern Michigan looks fine on Saturday, especially north of Bay City/Ludington.

The entire state of Michigan benifits from cooler and less humid air on Sunday and Monday. Highs will be in the 70s and lower 80s state wide. Another warm up looks to begin middle part of next week.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Severe Weather Update.

For the most part the severe weather has stop across the Detroit area. We had some severe storms push through the metro with some reports of hail.

Severe weather is really get going across central lower Michigan. Right along a warm front is where some super cells have fired.

It will still remain muggy for the overnight across southern lower michigan with temps only going into the lower 70s.

Full forecast update coming later

Severe Storms

Storms are starting to get there act together on the west side of MI and will start to march east. areas around US-127 should begin to see the stroms around 430-5 and around metro detroit around and after 530. Some storms this afternoon will producing damaging winds. Isolated hail and tornadoes are also possible.

Severe T-Storm Watch

Severe T-Storm Watch is in effect for Central and Southern Lower MI until 9pm. Biggest threat from these storms Sunday afternoon and early evening will be damaging winds. However an isolated tornado and severe hail can't be ruled out as well.

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Severe T-Storm Watch

Severe T-Storm Watch remains in effect until 10pm for all of lower MI. Some storms maybe severe with large hail and damaging winds.

The other story is the heat today, temps will push into the 90s with heat indexes near 100 before the storms.

TK

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Severe T-Storm Warning

Severe T-Storm Warning until 2pm/1pm (CDT) for Gogebic County. Storm is capable of producing 60mph winds and large hail east of Ironwood.

U.P. Severe Weather...

Tornado Watch is in effect for Upper Michigan from Marquette/Delta Counties West and Southward until 8pm/7pm Central. There is a chance of severe weather for the Upper Michigan yes and even a tornado or too. But I think the bigger tornado threat with possibly a couple EF-3 or higher tornadoes are going to be in Wisconsin south and west of Green Bay. Still be alert, especially in the Central and Western U.P.

For the day Thursday, Lower Michigan is in the severe weather threat.

As for temperatures, near 90 on Wednesday and low to mid 90s for Thursday. 80s and 90s for the north Wednesday. 70s Thursday

Thursday, July 8, 2010

Bye Bye Heat!

Temps will cool off into the 80s on Friday and less humidity! Weekend isn't looking to bad as well with dry conditions and temps in the mid to upper 80s. Humidity might tick up a touch Sunday.

System bares watching Monday into Tuesday. Weather might get interesting Monday into Tuesday with possible severe weather.

Ridge looks to re-estabish its self late next week, so another heat wave is possible Next Thursday and Friday

Dangerous Heat Wednesday

Heat Advisory is now in effect for the entire Detroit NWS County Warned Area until 8am Thursday, A Heat Advisory is in effect for West Michigan from Lansing to Jackson westward until 8pm Wednesday Night. Also the Michigan DNR has issued an Air Quality Alert for the Detroit Area for Wednesday. Highs today will be in the low to mid 90s across the lower lakes with heat indexes at over over 100. Lows Thursday Morning, Not much better in the upper 70s.

Best bet is to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day. But if you have to be outdoors, make sure you take plenty of breaks and drinks alot of water. Tigers game Wednesday Afternoon same drill. Make sure you're drinking tons of water, and if you can (not 100% sure) see if they have cooling centers at Comerica Park. If they do you might want to take advantage of that.

There is a slight chance of storms as well Wednesday afternoon, but don't hold you're breath... Better chance of Thursday with a cold front moving into the area.

Heat Advisory

Heat Advisory is now ineffect through Late Wednesday. High temperatures Tuesday and Wedensday will be in the mid 90s with heat indexes in the 100-105 range, especially on Wednesday. Tuesday the dewpoints will be lower slightly, but its still going to feel awful and heat indexes will still be in the upper 90s. Lows at night will only cool off into the mid to upper 70s with heat indexes still in the in the upper 80s, possible near 90 on Tuesday AM, Tuesday Night and Wednesday Night.

A Heat Advisory is issued in the Detroit CWA when either temperatures are between 95-100, heat indexes are between 95-105 and or lows at night only drop to no lower than 75. People need to do outdoor activities in the early morning the next few days (before 9am) or after the sun goes down. If you must work outside, drink plenty of water, and take frequent breaks. Best bet between 11am and 6pm is stay inside in the AC. If you have no, AC ... head to a cooling center or a place that does. And if all else fails, the lake works too.

We might sneak in a storm on Wendesday, better chance of storms on Thursday.

Sneak Peak 4th of July

Wow, a comfortable last couple nights, in fact almost "cold" Tuesday Night into Wednesday morning as temps took a nose dive into the 40s across most locations. I hope everyones AC and fans enjoyed this nice break because I am a afraid that they're going to be put back to work starting Saturday.

Friday the area of high pressure that was over the great lakes and giving us excellent sleeping nights will start to shift stage right out of the area and open the door for a southwest and eventually moist flow. Temperatures will be a few dergees warmer than Thursday. But I think the region really starts to notice a difference starting Saturday. And by Independence Day the heat and humidy will really be turned up! I'll leave some state maps of temperatures up at the bottom.

Next Chance of rain for the southern part of the state doesn't come in until at least Monday. If you're going to Northern Michigan, Rain chances start to increase Sunday in the Upper Pensuala and for the rest of the region on Monday.

Highs for lower MI including the DET, GR, Tri Cites, and Lansing will be in the mid to upper 80s Saturday. Lower 90s Sunday through Tuesday. Lows won't be in the 70s... It will be warm in Northern MI on Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday. UP will see highs in the 80s on Saturday, upper 70s and low 80s Sunday with a chance of storms.

Saturday Temperatures across the state, from NWS offices across the state

Sunday High temperatures, same thank you as above, Hotter than a firecracker?

Sunday's rain chances, mainly across the Western UP. Better chance of rain for the rest of the state starting Monday as a cold front moves in.

Tornado Watch

Tornado Watch has been issued for SW lower MI, parts of NW Ohio and Northern Indiana until 1am. Line of storms you can see on the map will continue to progess eastward through the night. Also you can see storms starting to pop in SW lower Michigan. Damaging Winds and Tornadoes are the main threats with this, Metro Detroit is not under a Tornado Watch at this time. But I'm still expecting this line of storms to be in our area after 11pm and still packing a good punch.

Tornado watch extends from Lansing to Fort Wayne IN and West towards Lake Michigan.

Ill keep updating the blog as ness.

TK

Severe Weather Update

In a holding pattern now in Lower Michigan for storms. Moderate risk Wednesday afternoon was trimed to roughly a Port Huron to Lansing to Benton Harbor Line and South/Southeast. Storms are starting to fire west of Chicago and im expecting those storms to form a bow echo line and move through Southern Michigan between 7pm and Midnight. Main threat from this will be severe winds possibly up to 70mph or stronger. An isolated tornado can't be ruled out as well.

In addition, Isolated cells may form in Lower Michigan and Northern Indiana before the main line pushes through, This is where the tornado threat will be maximized.

Once we get through tonight, Weather looks very nice Thursday and for Friday's Jobbie Noonier blow out!

Iam expecting some sort of weather watch to be issed before 7pm. Once that happens ill have a new blog.

TK

Shake, Rattle and Roll.

A 5.5 earthquake centered east of Toronto happened appoxmently around 1:40pm eastern. The quake was felt as far west of Chicago and as far south of New York. I personally didn't feel any shaking motion. But a heard a couple of weird sounds in the house. Then a couple mins later I find out about the earthquake. So pretty much 2 and 2 together with that.

So far ive heard nothing about damaging into Canada.

TK

Severe T-Storm Watch

Severe T-Storm watch is in efffect for lower Michigan until 3pm. This is round number 1 Wedenesday. This round's main threats will be severe wind in excess of 60mph. Isolated tornado can't be ruled out.

Will catch a break, then later this afternoon a sigificant severe weather outbreak still remains posible. More on that in the last blog.

TK
